In fact this business started one year before the Declaration of Independence was signed. I am talking about what we know today as The United States Postal Service.

There is only one other profession that has survived this long. Some people will even say that all that time was needed to get the letters delivered. I think that was an exaggeration. I know for a fact that the USPS was our countrys most efficient and trusted government agency. I know this because I was a letter carrier for 32 years. I have seen the postal service at their all time peak as they entered the computerized age. I am also witnessing the fall of the postal service thanks to the computerized age.

Its survival is now a top news story that promises to get bigger with each passing day. THE ROUTE takes the reader through my 32 year career so each reader can experience the highs and the lows of this time honored part of Americana.I would not bore you with the mail processing aspect of the postal service.

I do touch on that briefly but I introduce you to the American Postal worker, the good, the bad and the ugly. Currently every employee is in an ugly state of mind. During these hard times management is doing all it can to keep their own high paying jobs at the expense of the good hard working employees. I take you behind the scenes after which you will come away amazed that mail actually gets delivered. The postal service has over 596,000 employees.

An organization of this size does end up with some zany rules and policies. Reading this will get you as frustrated as most of the employees are. You will begin to grasp how the term “Going Postal” became a cultural phase. To add spice to this story I take you for a ride into my own personal life. Yes, THE ROUTE becomes a memoir.

You do not need to be famous to have the reader be interested in what goes on in another persons life. My life would make Walter Mitty envious. Many people call me a dreamer, or just plain crazy. Maybe I just took too many hockey pucks to the head.

Regardless, my life has been anything but normal. I take you off my mail route and onto my life route. The chapters will cover how I adopted my 2 sons from Korea only to find out my wife is a lesbian. I share my comical experiences of how I spent 5 years uncovering that truth. I tell you how my thought patterns worked to get my softball team into Attica Prison to play the inmates. Not just once but seven times.

I share the story of how I managed a Triple A baseball team for 2 games and won them both. I explain how I changed the career path of the great Baltimore Oriole, Cal Ripken Jr. when he was 9 years old. To cap that off I played in a regular season pro ice hockey game as a goalie and actually won the game then proposed to my present wife at center ice. Did that on national television at the age of 49. You said Walter who?Its about time that you see this before it is gone. Gone like the pony express, the milk man, video stores, American cars and lickable stamps. All I ask is that you give this a quick read and judge for yourself.

It is a book that is well overdue, just like the mail.
